Obituary For Virginia Ellen Shaw

Virginia E. Shaw, age 90, of Waukee, passed away on January 26, 2025, at MercyOne Medical Center-West Lakes.

Visitation will be at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church (510 E. 1st St., Ankeny, IA) on Monday, February 3, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., with the rosary at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, also at the church, with burial to follow at Ankeny Memorial Gardens. Visitors and friends are invited to lunch at the church following the burial. Mass will be livestreamed at www.OLIH.org

Virginia was born August 31, 1934, in rural Oxford, Iowa, the daughter of John and Mary (Holland) Donohoe. She graduated from Cosgrove Consolidated High School in 1952. After graduation she moved to Iowa City and worked for Rock Island Motor Transit. In 1964 she married Leon Shaw. They lived in Oskaloosa, Washington, Knoxville, and Ankeny before moving to Waukee in 2023.

Virginia enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom until she went back to work for the Knoxville School District, first as a teacher’s aide, then as a secretary. She loved being with the children. After retiring she worked part time at the law offices of Johnson, Jordan and Lane.

When they moved to Ankeny, she became a volunteer in the office at the Des Moines Botanical Center. She also enjoyed helping out at her church and became an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Leon; her children, Robert (Lisa) Shaw and Marita (Kurt) Vogel; her beloved grandchildren, Alex Shaw and Brooke Vogel (fiancé Johnny Baires); beloved great-grandchild, Jonathon Baires; and her siblings, Larry (Janet) Donohoe, Mary Kay Hull, Bob (Tammy) Donohoe, Dick (Val) Donohoe, Bill (Chere) Donohoe, Kathy (Jack) Wombacher, and Jim Donohoe; and her many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael; her parents, John and Mary Donohoe; her sisters, Shirley Burnett and Lois Kral; nephew, Dennis Kral; brothers-in-law, Milo Kral, Wayne Hull, and Don Burnett.
