Shirley Eileen Calkin of Polk City passed away January 12, 2026.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Saylorville Church (2429 NW 6th Drive, Des Moines).
Shirley was born February 8, 1939, to Arlous “Jack” and Rose Carter. Shirley was raised in Boone, Iowa along with her siblings, Bonnie, Janet, and Ron. Following graduation from Boone High School in 1957, Shirley met the love of her life, Bobby Calkin. They were married on March 2, 1958. During their nearly 68 years of marriage, they lived in several states and in too many homes to mention.
Shirley loved her family, living by the lake, and enjoyed spending time watching wildlife. She always made sure everyone was well fed.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Bob Calkin; her sons, Jeff (Kathy) Calkin and Jay Calkin; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Cole) Conley, Michelle (Alex) McClure, Courtney (Kris) Erichsen, and Jake Calkin; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Rose; sisters, Bonnie and Janet; brother, Ron; sister-in-law, Barb; brother-in-law, Walter “Bud”; and daughter-in-law, Catherine.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at Mercy West Lakes for their exceptional care for Shirley during her final days.
