Robert J. “Bob” Smith, age 60, passed away February 14, 2025. John and Beverly Smith welcomed Bob, their fifth child, on June 14, 1964.
During his elementary and middle school years, Bob enjoyed belonging to the BSA and he was on the path to becoming an Eagle Scout. Camping was a favorite activity as he loved the outdoors, plant identification, and bird watching. Bob completed high school and received his diploma in May 1985.
In September 1980, at the age of 16, Bob suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury in a car accident on his way to football practice. He was very proud to be on his beloved Ankeny Hawks football team.
As a result of the TBI, Bob was in a coma for nine months and remained non-verbal for two years. He began talking after having an emergency appendectomy.
Throughout the trials and tribulations of the past 45 years, Bob remained faithful to and trusting in God’s plan.
His BIG smile, sense of humor and LONG-WINDED story telling will be greatly missed.
Bob was preceded in death by parents, John and Beverly Smith, and his siblings Linda Madison and David Smith. He is survived by his brother John (Jeania), sister Lorri (Ray) Smajd, and sister-in-law Jody Smith; nephews Chad and Jason Smith, Bryan and Paul Smajd, and Nathan Smith and his nieces Brendalee (Matt) Schoning, Jennifer Madison, and Christina (Tim) Wyckoff; ten great nieces and nephews; and many extended family members.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church (510 E. 1st Street, Ankeny, IA) at 1:00 P.M. on Monday February 24, 2025. Visitation will be held at OLIH one hour prior to Mass. He will be laid to rest at Ankeny Memorial Gardens following the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to On With Life, 715 SW Ankeny Road, Ankeny, IA 50023.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to REM Iowa for their many years of loving care for Bob and to the Suncrest Hospice care team and the staff of Accura Healthcare of Ogden for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time.
