Obituary For Richard Kenneth Schaffer

Richard “Rick” Schaffer, 68, of Ankeny, passed away peacefully at his home on May 13, 2026.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Malachy Catholic Church, 405 Gerald St., Madrid, Iowa. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Interment will take place at 3:00 p.m. at St. Vincent Cemetery on Redwood Avenue in Riverside, Iowa.

Rick was born June 8, 1957, at Mercy Hospital to Raymon George and Elizabeth Joan Schaffer. He graduated from East High School in 1975. In June 1976, Rick enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving four years with several tours of duty, including Japan, the Philippines, and Australia.

Rick married Deb Roskowski in May 1980 and later married Danielle Ameling in 2002. He was a self-employed carpenter known for his strong work ethic and worked alongside several family members throughout the years.

Rick will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his love of fishing, trips to the casino, and enjoying a “cold one” with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Danielle Schaffer; his children, Brandon (Abbie) Schaffer, Britni (David) Hennick, and Emily (Kelle) Miller, all of Madrid, Iowa; stepchildren, Jonathan (Kaitlin) Ameling of Stewartville, Minnesota, and Zachary (Kaylee) Ameling of Clutier, Iowa; grandchildren, Stevie, Lincoln, and Savannah Schaffer, Frances and Rafe Miller, Avery Hennick, and Addie, Olivia, and Kinsley Ameling; siblings, Rene Dooly, Greg (Nancy) Schaffer, Dan Schaffer, Ron Schaffer, Larry (Shelly) Schaffer, Garry (Debby) Schaffer, Rhonda (Mike) Golightly, Lisa (Gordon) Bowen, and David (Stephanie) Schaffer; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymon George and Elizabeth Joan Schaffer; grandparents, Theodore and Mary Schaffer and Melo and Geneva Schnoebelen; sisters-in-law, Kathy Schaffer and Connie Schaffer; and his niece and great-nephew, Darcy Schaffer and Hank Snider.
