Obituary For Philip D. Hanks

Philip Hanks, 68, passed away on his family farm Monday, October 5, 2026.

A celebration will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, October 11, 2026, at the family farm (30760 530th Ave. Kelley, IA).

Philip was born on September 21, 1958, to Dean and Beulah Hanks of Kelley, Iowa. Philip went to Kelley school and graduated from Ballard High School in 1977. He worked on his family farm and helped his dad with lots of house projects. He started at 3M in Ames in 1979. He was known to talk about factory life and made lifelong friends in the 35+ years there.

He also met his wife, Claudia, at 3M and they married July 3, 1982. Shortly after, they built their family’s home in Huxley where they raised their family for 34 years. His greatest accomplishment in life was his three children. He repeatedly told anyone he talked to how proud he was of them. Instilling work ethic, perseverance, and riding two wheels.

Phil can be remembered for working hard on the farm and at the factory, riding wheelies on motorcycles, trips to see his dear friend Bart, and making his rounds to his family and friend’s houses and local establishments. Phil’s greatest joy was becoming a grandpa to Sunny and Waylon. Phil loved his family more than anything; talking about them constantly.

He is survived by his children, Brook Holliday (Randy), Brittany Strumpfer (AJ), and Jacob Dean Hanks (Brittany); his grandchildren, Sunny and Waylon Strumpfer; his siblings, Dennis Hanks (Pam), David Hanks, and Mary Oxendine (Dale); and many nieces and nephews.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jeanne Foell (Arvin); sister-in-law, Cindy Hanks; and nephew, Mike Hanks.

I worked at 3M and knew Phil for many years! We didn't work in the same department but every once and awhile if I would work a week end in a different department I'd get to work with Phil. He was always funny. If Mark and I would were eating at the Nite Hawk in Slater and Phil walked in, he'd always take the time to visit with us! Rest in Peace Phil!!
