Norma Ann McCann, 88, passed away September 3, 2025.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a time of sharing at 6:15 p.m. on Monday, September 8, 2025, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd). Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church (510 E. 1st St). Burial will immediately follow at Ankeny Memorial Gardens. The service will be livestreamed at www.OLIH.org
Norma was born August 12, 1937, in Le Mars, IA. She was the daughter of Joseph and Philomena (Harpenau) Schwarz. Norma graduated from Hinton High School in Hinton, IA, and went on to graduate from Westmar College in Le Mars, IA, with a teaching degree. She coached and refereed girls sports for many years. Basketball was her favorite sport and she was an all-state forward and Iowa Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer, two-time AAU All American, and gold medal winner in the 1963 Pan American Games in Brazil.
She married Patrick McCann in 1963, and they had four children: Bruce, Janis, Troy, and Kevin. In 1986, the family moved back to Iowa to operate a family business in Des Moines, General Fire & Safety, which many family members were a part of until 2024 when the company sold.
Norma loved to play golf, enjoyed watching Iowa State and Iowa games as well as being a big Cubs fan.
Norma is survived by her husband, Patrick; children, Bruce (Lori) McCann of Ankeny, Janis McCann of Ankeny, Troy (Jana) McCann of Clive, and Kevin (Denise) McCann of Burke, VA; twelve grandchildren, Amber, Jennifer, Jonathan, Connor, Courtney, Hannah, Lauren, Rachel, Patrick, Cole, Jake, and Collin; two step-grandchildren, Nadia and Justin Cover; great-grandchildren, Maia, Halle, Adeline, Forest, Noah, Linkin, Jonathan Jr., Mason, and Christopher; and five siblings, Eleanor, Anita, Berniece, Darlene, and Lois.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Philomena Schwarz; and brothers, Marvin and Roger.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church or the Boline-Manfredi VFW Post in Norma’s name.
