Margaret Whiteley, age 95, died February 13, 2025.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd, Ankeny, IA).
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Lake Washburn Association General Fund at LWA, PO Box 26, Outing, MN 56662.
Margaret grew up in Lu Verne, Iowa, with her brother Bud. Her childhood was influenced by the Great Depression, World War II, and her grandparents’ farm. This farm was in her family since Iowa was a territory. She was the proud owner at her death.
After graduation from high school, Margaret attended Iowa State Teachers College (renamed University of Northern Iowa), where she met Frank Whiteley. They were married on August 13, 1950, and moved to Columbus Junction, Iowa, where Frank secured his first teaching and coaching positions. In 1952, they welcomed their first child William. In 1954, Margaret and Frank moved to Ankeny, Iowa, where son Terry was born, followed by daughter Susan. Margaret continued to raise the children as Frank’s career advancement led to moving the family to Mitchellville, Iowa, and Palatine, Illinois.
Margaret joined the workforce in 1965 in the office at the Iowa Training School for Girls in Mitchellville. After moving to Palatine in 1970, Margaret worked at Fremd High School as a book clerk until her retirement. In retirement, Frank and Margaret moved back to Ankeny and traveled to their lake home in Minnesota and their winter home in Mesa, Arizona. After Frank’s death in 2002, Margaret spent her time active in her church, the Ankeny VFW, and traveling to her cabin.
Margaret is survived by sons William (Sally) and Terry (Diane), daughter Susan Berg (Eric), five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, husband Frank, grandsons Lucas, Tyler, and Jack, and daughter-in-law Becca.
Mom, you are loved and will be missed. Your journey is over, and you can rest. “And I will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of my hand.”
Send flowers to the service of Margaret Whiteley
I have enjoyed working with Margaret since 1994! I enjoyed hearing stories of her family, Frank, and her cabin. I can still hear her voice and am sure I always will. I will be out of state in April and regret not being able to attend her funeral. Kristy Barzen, Ameriprise Financial

Some of my very earliest n fond memories include the young Whitley family n kids next door, in a new neighborhood of an ideal small town in the 50s. We were blessed.
