Fonda Sue Wettestad, 74, passed away August 2, 2025, after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was under the care of Hospice of the Midwest.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 8, 2025, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.) A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church (2110 W. 1st St.) Burial will take place at Main Station Cemetery in Moravia, IA.
Fonda was born on May 12, 1951, in Centerville, IA, to Kermit and Rosalie Gladfelder. She attended California Country School in Moravia, IA, until her freshman year when her family moved to Mystic, IA. Fonda graduated from Centerville High School in 1969.
In 1969, Fonda attended Vennard College in Oskaloosa, IA. She played piano for their first music group, The Extensions, a cooperation between Vennard College and The World Gospel Mission. The group traveled to Honduras over Spring Break as well as touring the US the following summer. A life-long lover of music, Fonda played flute and sang and taught piano to many children for 20 years.
Fonda married Keith Haworth in 1971 and they were blessed with a daughter, Chastity, in 1974 and a son, Aaron, in 1978.
Fonda received a Bachelor’s Degree in Bible Studies and a minor in Music from Vennard in 1973. Later she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from William Penn College, and a Master’s Degree in Mathematic Education from UNI. She earned the National Teacher Certification from the State of Iowa in 2002.
Fonda taught sixth grade reading and math at West Branch Middle School for 12 years and taught for Southeast Polk School District for 14 years.
In 1999, Fonda married Jim Wettestad. She enjoyed traveling, music and quilting but the true joy of her life was spending time with her and Jim's children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; children, Chastity Haworth of Iowa City, IA, and Aaron (Emily) Haworth of North Liberty, IA; step-children, Paul (Teri) Wettestad of Enumclaw, WA, Lara (Cary) Justmann of Urbandale, IA, and Phillip (JJ) Wettestad of Highlands Ranch, CO; grandchildren, Zoe Haworth (10), Nolan Haworth (7), Hannah Oakie (27), Alan Powers-Wettestad (25), Sawyer Wettestad (16), and Emersen Wettestad (14); and siblings, Elaine (Mike) Heusinkveld of Sioux Falls, SD, Joel (Jane Walker) Gladfelder of Moravia, IA, and Tom (Lisa) Gladfelder of Eudora, KS; niece Allison Gladfelder of Eudora, KS; and niece Haley Heusinkveld of Tempe, AZ.
Memorials may be directed to the Iowa Democratic Party or The Ankeny Quilting and Sewing Circle.
