Obituary For Christopher Michael Degner

Christopher Michael Degner, 47, of Denver, Colorado, formerly of Ankeny, Iowa, embarked on one final adventure when he entered God’s kingdom after a courageous four-month battle with an aggressive form of lung cancer. True to his nature, Chris faced his illness with determination, curiosity, and a stubbornness that served him well throughout his life.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Ankeny First United Methodist Church (206 SW Walnut St, Ankeny), followed by visitation and Ice Cream Social in Fellowship Hall.

Born on February 18, 1979, Chris entered the world already looking toward what was next. He graduated from the original Ankeny High School in 1997 before attending the University of Illinois, where he studied Finance and Rhetoric. Drawn equally to numbers and words, business and art, he later moved to New York City to pursue writing and life in one of the world’s great creative centers. He earned a Master of International and Public Affairs degree from Columbia University and spent more than a decade living, working, and exploring New York.

Chris built a successful career in investment banking, energy, and research, ultimately serving as a Managing Director at Water Tower Research. Yet his career was only one chapter of a life defined by curiosity.

He was a lifelong student, an avid reader whose hundreds of books traveled with him from city to city, a music lover, a sports fanatic, and a collector in every sense of the word. His interests ranged from Lego sets and intricate puzzles to baseball cards, books, and the countless experiences he gathered throughout his life. He completed triathlons, followed professional and collegiate sports with enthusiasm, and rarely passed up the opportunity to attend a live concert. His interests ranged effortlessly from financial markets to literature, from weather systems to world politics, from Iowa farming to international affairs.

Adventure called to Chris often, and he answered. His travels carried him across Europe, South America, China, Africa, countries in the Middle East, and beyond. He backpacked through foreign countries on his own, floated down the Amazon River, studied abroad in Colombia, and embraced every opportunity to see more of the world. Though he eventually made his home in Denver, drawn by the mountains, skiing, biking, golf, and Colorado sunshine, Iowa and its family roots always remained part of him.

Chris was endlessly curious and never quite finished deciding what he wanted to do next. He often seemed to have one foot planted firmly where he was and the other already stepping toward his next adventure.

Though his time was far too short, Chris filled it completely—with ideas, books, music, adventures, conversations, and love. His story continues in the people he inspired, the places he explored, and the memories he leaves behind.

He is survived by the love of his life, Emily Drapal; his beloved mini Bernedoodle, Harper; his parents, Rich and Nancy Degner of Ankeny; and countless family members, friends, colleagues, and fellow travelers whose lives were made richer by knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or Ankeny Dollars for Scholars (local scholarships to Ankeny graduates) in Chris’s honor.
