Carla Ferguson Greiner, 96, of Ankeny, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, surrounded by her family. Carla was born July 12, 1929, the youngest of three daughters of Spike and Irma Ferguson in Jefferson, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd). Visitation will follow the service from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., at the same location. The memorial service will be livestreamed at the following link: https://vimeo.com/event/5762188 .
Carla attended Iowa State and Drake, earning an associate degree in teaching. On June 18,1950, Carla married Bill Greiner. They made their home in and around Jefferson as Bill was engaged in farming and teaching veterans. Carla taught school before their two daughters, Sue and Carol, were born. In 1956 they moved to Ankeny when Bill took a position with the Iowa Department of Soil Conservation. Carla took a position as a teacher’s aide as they raised the girls and welcomed their son, Mark.
Carla and Bill shared a deep love, witnessed by 64 years of devotion, faith, and partnership prior to his passing. Carla continued to live in the same house in Ankeny, only moving to an assisted living facility in her 96th year. Carla loved to “puzzle”, spending countless hours at jigsaw puzzles.
She was a person of faith and service, as was Bill. They were longtime members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where they spent many volunteer hours.
Carla loved getting together with family and an annual reunion was begun at Lake Okoboji in the late 1950s. This involved the immediate and extended family and continues to this day. Happily, Carla was able to enjoy this family gathering even in 2025 as her health was failing.
Carla will be lovingly remembered by her children, Sue (Jim) Meimann of Des Moines, Carol (Randy) Colwell of Columbia, Missouri, and Mark (Pam) Greiner of Ft. Myers, Florida; grandchildren, Katie O’Neill, Megan Mortier, Natalie Bass, Meredith Feher, Anna, Will, and Claire Greiner; and her nine great-grandchildren, Jimmy, Marie, and Ada O’Neill, Charlie and Mae Mortier, Parker and Bennett Bass, and Matthew and Andrew Feher.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Jeannie Kottra and Colleen Castro, her friends and helpers during the time she lived independently in her home. They would also like to thank her long-time family physician, Dr. Brian Scott, and his nurse, Donni, for their exceptional care.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to: DMARC Food Pantry, Wesley Life Meals on Wheels, or the Animal Rescue League.
Send flowers to the service of Carla Jean (Ferguson) Greiner
