Donald B. Nelson, 87, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, surrounded by his family.

In keeping with Don’s wishes, there will be no formal services. However, in true family fashion, his family is bending Don’s rules just a little and inviting family and friends to join in a Celebration of Life from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Sunday, July 12, 2026, at Smokey D’s (5055 NW 2nd St., Des Moines).

Don was born in Waterloo, IA on March 16, 1939, to George and Rosetta Nelson. He graduated from Madrid High School in 1957 and began his career with John Deere just a few days later, dedicating 37 years to the company. Don retired in 1994 from the Experimental Department, Building #3.

In 1961, Don married the love of his life, Sandy Carroll. Together they built a life filled with family, memories, and 64 years of marriage.

Don is survived by his wife, Sandy Nelson; his children, Debra Nelson and Ron Nelson (Rhonda); his grandchildren, Alex Nelson (Josie Smith) and Matthew Nelson (Ashlyn); and his great-grandchildren, Cody (5) and Mason (7 months), who brought him much joy.
