Julie Rae Treangen

04/03/1953 - 09/05/2025

Julie Treangen, 72, of Des Moines, peacefully gained her angel wings on September 5, 2025, after a courageous battle with ALS and FTD.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Church (510 E. 1st St., Ankeny, IA). Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. prior to Mass at the church. Burial will follow at Ankeny Memorial Gardens (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd).

Julie was born on April 3, 1953, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, to Donald and Louise Treangen. She graduated from Ankeny High School and earned a B.A. in Journalism from Drake University.

Julie was a passionate traveler and lover of the outdoors. She embraced adventure—joining the rowing team, skydiving in Hawaii, portaging in the Boundary Waters, and exploring Europe. She could be found walking around Gray’s Lake, hiking through Greenwood Park’s rose garden, and spotting bald eagles. She had a sweet tooth for chocolate and root beer floats, and a love for live music that often led her to the dance floor.

Above all, Julie was devoted to her family. She never missed a game, recital, or moment to cheer on her grandchildren. She uplifted her children with unconditional love and endless encouragement. Her strength, radiant smile, and ability to live fully in the present will be remembered by all who knew her. Julie’s superpower was choosing joy—laughing daily, staying positive, and making life beautiful despite its challenges.

Julie is survived by her son, Matthew (Rachael) Darrah; daughter, Kristen (Brad) Smith; grandchildren, Penelope, Charleston, and Fisher Smith; sister and best friend, Lynn Treangen; brothers, Paul (Monica) Treangen and John (Canice) Treangen; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Louise Treangen, and many dear relatives and friends.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to all of the mentors, caregivers, and staff who have provided Julie with their exceptional care, especially the Isreal Hospice House and Mary Greeley. Donations in Julie’s memory will be shared with the caregivers who supported her journey.

Fly high, Julie.
