Gitta Nelson

Gitta Nelson, 84, of Ankeny, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 3, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Services of Iowa, 4208 N. Ankeny Blvd., Ankeny, Iowa. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with burial at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

Gitta was born on March 20, 1941, in Ankeny, Iowa, to Joseph and Violet Bianchi. She graduated from Ankeny High School in 1959. Gitta retired after 31 years working for the State at The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division.

Gitta lived a life marked by resilience, devotion, and deep faith. A proud and devoted Catholic, she drew strength from her beliefs and shared that strength with those around her. Known for her strong will, sharp wit, and unwavering values, Gitta was also loved for her generous heart and thrifty nature—always finding ways to give.

Gitta met the love of her life, Earl Nelson, and they were married on November 12, 1963. Gitta deeply loved her husband, to whom she was devoted throughout their life together. Family meant everything to her, she cared deeply for her son and grandchildren, and she loved unconditionally. Her sister was her best friend and the bond she shared with her siblings was lifelong.

Gitta loved good food and cherished gathering her loved ones around the table. Her home was always a place of comfort and memories were made. Gitta loved spending time with her great-grandchildren; she never missed a birthday or holiday throughout the years. She will be remembered for her love and devotion to her family.

Gitta is survived by her son, Earl (Wendy) Nelson Jr.; her grandchildren, Earl (Lindsey) Nelson III, Rachel (Jeremy) McCarn, and Geoff Lewis; her great-grandchildren, Hillary, Micah, Evan, Harley, Hailey and Noah; her siblings, Joseph Bianchi, Marilyn Padellford and Richard Bianchi; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Joseph and Violet Bianchi; her grandson, Allan Curray; and by her beloved husband, Earl Nelson, who will be laid to rest beside her to share eternity together.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Sunny View Care Center and Suncrest Hospice for their exceptional care for Gitta during her final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Rachel McCarn, who will ensure they are distributed in accordance with Gitta’s wishes.
