Phyllis G. Volz, 98, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025, at UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.) with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church (460 NW Washington Ave.) in Elkhart. Burial will immediately follow at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.
Phyllis was born to William and Martha Ament in rural Marcus, Iowa, on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1926. She was the second of two children, embracing her farm life wholeheartedly.
Phyllis graduated from Marcus High School in 1944 as a Salutatorian. She attended business school in Sioux City, Iowa, then moved to Des Moines in September 1945, working downtown.
She met the love of her life, Henry Volz, at a Farm Bureau dance and they were married January 11, 1947, in Marcus, Iowa. They made their home farming outside Elkhart, Iowa, welcoming five children.
Phyllis served her God and church family at St. Mary’s Holy Cross in Elkhart, Garden and Women’s Clubs, 4-H as leader, enjoyed tending her massive garden on the farm, and raising her active family there.
Phyllis and Bud spent 29 winters in McAllen, Texas, and moved in 2000 from the farm to Maplewood in Ankeny, Iowa. In 2018 she moved to Independence Village Assisted Living where she received excellent care making many new friends.
Phyllis is survived by her children, William (Monica) of Suffolk, VA, Steve of St. Charles, MO, Martha (Bob) Brendel of Athens, GA, Nick (Joyce) of Elkhart, and Teresa (Mark) Blunk of Ankeny; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty Wines, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 64 years, Henry; brother, Dick Ament, and sister-in-law, Evelyn Ament.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Holy Cross Catholic Church.
