Donald Henry Ehm (Don), age 73, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N Ankeny Blvd, Ankeny, IA 50023). A funeral service will take place at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 6, 2025, with a luncheon to follow at Lutheran Church of Hope – Ankeny (520 NW 36th St, Ankeny, IA 50023).
Don was born on July 15, 1951, and graduated from Ballard Community Senior High School in 1969. He attended Boone Community College before beginning his loyal and dedicated career at John Deere, where he worked from 1973 to 2003. In 2003, he and wife Sherry moved to Nashville, TN, where Don opened and operated his own line striping business from 2003 to 2010. In June 2010, they returned to Ankeny and Don began working for the State of Iowa in grounds maintenance, retiring in September 2021. He also founded Thirsty Lawns Irrigation and Back Flow in 2010, which he successfully ran until selling the business in 2022.
Don was an active member of his community and church, participating in The Menders, a service ministry through his church and also participating in the Izaak Walton League. He had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping, and boating.
One of his greatest joys was watching his kids follow their interests and passions and spoiling them with his unwavering attention. Regardless of his own interests, he supported his kids and grandkids in everything they pursued. His kindness, gentleness and service to others will be a legacy that lives on in his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Sherry; his children, Katherine (Justin) and Erin (Erik); his grandchildren, Logan (fiancée Grace), Caleb and Jonah; his brothers, John (Audrey) and Rollie (Natalie); his niece, Caroline (Dean); his nephews, Jason, Erik, and Nik (fiancée Adora); as well as many other loving family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Dorothy Ehm.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Hospice of the Midwest for their compassionate care and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran Church of Hope – Ankeny.

Have known Don and his family for over 60 years. He was a 4-H member and his dad, a leader, when I worked with Story County 4-H members in the 1960's. As I recall, his mother's family was part of the 1855 Palestine Lutheran Church wagon train to the Huxley area. I always respected Don's work ethic to help out wherever he could.
So sorry to hear of Don's passing. I worked with Don at John Deere in Department 51. It was great to know him. We became good friends He would always be available to lend a hand. I will not be able to attend the service. (broken ribs from or a fall on ice but we will meet again where there is no sickness or pain. Your friend for ever. Floyd Wilhelmson
So sorry to hear of Donald's passing. Was so pleased to see him at mom's funeral in January. We host a small group on Wednesday evenings. And I do taxes on Thursdays so it's not possible to be there for the visitation or the funeral. Have many fond memories of our families getting together for picnics at Ledges Park.
